To help fund Stanford University during its early years, Mrs. Leland Stanford put a lot of her own jewels up for sale. Before she offered them for sale, she had a huge "portrait" painted of them, rendered life-size. It hangs in a small museum on the university's grounds. If you Google-Image something like "Mrs. Stanford's jewel collection," you should get a hit. Or ten. --Juli K.
